Emily Blunt wants to make a Spider-Woman movie.

I don’t want to start any wild rumors (actually, I totally want to start wild rumors! The kind that can’t be ignored) but Emily Blunt, who at one point was going to be Natasha Romanova (Black Widow) in Iron Man 2, and has been my fancast pick for Jessica Drew (Spider-woman) FOREVER wore this to the LACMA Art + Film Gala held in Los Angeles Saturday evening:

No, it’s nothing like a red and yellow web winged jumpsuit.

But it’s totally an LBD spider-web. I APPROVE.

Ready-to-Wear Superhero: Spider-Man

by CHRISTIAN MILIK

My five year old daughter just became obsessed with Spider-Man. I don’t know how it happened. Now she is being Spider-man for Halloween, plays the Spider-Man 2 PS2 game at every opportunity and goes around singing the theme song. While observing this new found love for Spider-Man in my daughter I noticed a few things:

• Spider-Man’s look is truly iconic. You know who you’re looking at when you see his costume.
• Spider-Man’s costume has almost nothing to do with spiders as far as I can tell.
• It is a pure ‘costume’. You could never wear anything like it and be considered fashionable.

Since I’m always up for a challenge, I started thinking about how a modern woman could dress as Spider-Man and not get laughed off the streets. I think I came up with some cool alternatives.

Ready to Wear Superhero: Power Girl

by CHRISTIAN MILIK

If I were to make a list of the superheroes with the hardest costumes to pull off and wear as modern fashion, Power Girl would be near the top. She has a very iconic look that is “Superhero” from head to toe. She’s got a ridiculous figure and shows it off to the best of her ability. Most people would think that it would be impossible for a modern woman to dress as Power Girl and not be laughed off the streets. If any costume should remain in the realm of cosplay to be seen only at comic-con and then only on a few genetically blessed women (or disturbingly misguided men!) you would think it would be Power Girl.

However my friends over at Fantastic Fangirls have issued me the challenge. Can a modern woman pull off a ready-to-wear Power Girl look and still look fashionable? Lets see what we can do.

Flashback Friday: January Jones

You’ve heard the news. Betty Draper is the new Emma Frost in X-Men First Class. Or January Jones is, but at least 80% of the announcements called her Betty first, January second (and the last 20% had lines about January Frosting. So clever, right?). On the surface, Emma and Betty are quite similar. Underneath the surface they are nothing alike, and that makes it all the more interesting.

It is very unclear to me (and I’d venture a guess, to EVERYONE) what this movie is about. Emma Frost is not a “First Class” X-Men (meaning one of the first members of the team, whether or not she is First Class meaning awesome is up for debate and something of a polarizing topic for many fans — another similarity to Betty Draper, I’ll add). My favourite Emma is actually found in her solo title that featured her early years (circa First Class) but who knows what Emma this Emma is going to be so who knows if January is a good fit!

But we can discuss her LOOK.

Uniform / Controversy

As costume controversy has swirled around recent redesigns and movie revelations, I’ve said a few time that if it were up to me and realism all superheroes would wear uniforms, like the military. And I’d like to clarify that a little. I would hope it is very clear that I L-O-V-E-LOVE superhero and comic book fashion. This blog should be proof of that, right? So what am I talking about calling for “uniforms”, right?

I wants this jacket!

Magical Emma Watson

The new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer has me, just like everyone, ENORMOUSLY EXCITED. I love, love, love Harry Potter, books and film — I consider them parallel universes so I can enjoy each on its own merits. Of which there are THOUSANDS. And if Hermione must be considered allegorical to Bella (Wrong! Harry is the comparative to Bella, Hermione is probably Jacob because Ron has to be Edward and the rest of the Cullens are the rest of the Weasleys. But IF, as has been done A LOT –) Hermione LAUGHS (politely) and Bella walks off sulkingly because that’s all Bella does.

Anyway. As was pointed out to me by spudsfan, about a minute in to the trailer we have this:

OMG, y’all. Hermione is Zatanna!!

Interactive Wednesday: Leggings

Wonder Woman has a new costume.

I like a lot of this. I like the top, I can get behind the jacket, she looks fashionable and yet tough. The gold looks heavy and it’s a little too throwback to the early nineties for me but overall, I like it. Just one thing.

Wonder Woman is wearing Liquid Leggings.
