This is not very heroine chic.
It’s sexy and it’s snazzy and it pops (!) but it’s not heroine chic. Until this happened:
So I was looking for a Superheroine of the Venice Film Festival. A list of my favourites was there and all looking SHARP …but not heroine chic. Not like this:
She’s not in Venice, she’s at the GQ Men of the Year event but that matters about as much as the GQ Men of the Year. As in I’m sure SOMEONE cares but not compared to Emma Watson the Leather Tartan Faery Girl (that’s Magical Girl nomenclature, a string of fantastic descriptors). I mean, admit it: you don’t care why she’s there. She’s EMMA WATSON THE LEATHER TARTAN FAERY GIRL.
And she’s gonna save the world.
The new Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows trailer has me, just like everyone, ENORMOUSLY EXCITED. I love, love, love Harry Potter, books and film — I consider them parallel universes so I can enjoy each on its own merits. Of which there are THOUSANDS. And if Hermione must be considered allegorical to Bella (Wrong! Harry is the comparative to Bella, Hermione is probably Jacob because Ron has to be Edward and the rest of the Cullens are the rest of the Weasleys. But IF, as has been done A LOT –) Hermione LAUGHS (politely) and Bella walks off sulkingly because that’s all Bella does.
Anyway. As was pointed out to me by spudsfan, about a minute in to the trailer we have this:
OMG, y’all. Hermione is Zatanna!!
Gadgets. Everybody has a few and face it, we’re only gonna keep getting more (until they start making cyber implants). But hey, gadgets are entirely Geek Chic:
I secretly like Megan Fox. She says too much, it endears her to me. So does the Star Wars shirt and the fact that she reads Gen 13.
Continuing the theme of starlets who purport to read comics, here’s Miley Cyrus and her gadget of choice:
Hermione Granger would not wear this:
But on Emma Watson I really like it. It’s Karl Lagerfeld which makes me think of Dark Hermione, which is both terrifying and excellent, and it is shorts, which is both terrifying and excellent. At another event it wouldn’t be formal enough but for Britain’s People’s Choice Awards it’s just right.
